Definition
Basis weight is a measure of the weight per unit area. For linerboard, it is generally expressed as pounds per thousand square feet or grams per square meter at a specified moisture level. The industry has generally shifted from purchasing linerboard on a weight basis to purchasing on an area basis.
Influence
Non-uniformity of basis weight can cause problems principally through the effects the variation induces in other properties such as moisture content, porosity, and roll stock quality.
Potential Problems
Non-uniform basis weight that leads to variations in moisture content or porosity and which affects the winding qualities of the roll stock can cause a number of problems. Linerboard basis weights that differ from the nominal grade requirements may directly affect those users who utilize container tare weight in determining net content weights when packing their products.
