Definition
Caliper is a measure of the thickness of a sheet of corrugating medium.
Influence
If it is uniform, the thickness of medium has no significant direct effect on the combining or converting operations in a box plant. Variations in the thickness, however, particularly in the cross-direction, can have an influence on the corrugator operation.
Potential Problems
Uneven medium caliper can lead to poorly wound roll stock and to variations in hardness across the roll, This can cause web tension differentials as rolls unwind, which can lead to increased web breaks.
